Youth Programs

We are committed to supporting, equipping, teaching and loving our youth as they grow in faith. Here are some opportunities:

Kids for Christ (KFC):

On Wednesdays Mid-September- Holy Week, we offer Kids for Christ for pre-school (aged three, potty trained) to middle school. Older youth can be helpers. Youth attending Worthington Middle School can take the bus to the Worthington Intermediate School after school and join the group there. Worthington Intermediate and Prairie Elementary school students receive a snack after school in their cafeterias, play games, hang out on the playgrounds and then ride the bus to First Lutheran. Other youth may join us at First Lutheran at 4 pm. From 4-5:15 pm we will have games, a Bible lesson, crafts, service projects, music and more. At 5:15, a dinner is provided for all youth and their families. There is no KFC on Wednesdays when the Worthington School District is not in session or there is an early release. Contact the office for more information or email Brenda Richards at tinymustardseed1720@gmail.com.

Sunday School:

Join us at 8:45 on Sundays (mid-September- mid- May) for Sunday school. Games, snack, music, a Bible lesson and more. There is no Sunday School on long weekends for the Worthington District (MEA, Thanksgiving, etc).

Confirmation:

We partner with Grace Lutheran to offer Confirmation classes on Wednesdays 6:30-7:30 (mid-September to mid-May). Students can begin any time on or after their 7th grade school year. We usually meet at First Lutheran, but periodically engage in special events or meet at Grace Lutheran (78396 340th Ave). We cover topics from Luther’s Small Catechism and the Bible. We engage in service projects and fun events. We attend the ecumenical 507 youth rally and worship quarterly together. We require and provide a yearly retreat experience for our youth via Shetek Lutheran ministries. Our year begins mid-September with a parent/youth meeting. Please contact Pr Jeanette at pastorjeanettemcormick@gmail.com, Brenda Richards at tinymustardseed1720@gmail.com or call the church office for more information.

Youth Group:

7th-12th graders are invited to join us for Youth Group each week (mid-September to mid-May). 7:30-8:15. Faith lessons, games and more. We usually meet at First Lutheran but will sometimes travel to other places. We work with Grace Lutheran to complete Youth Group (and will periodically meet there).

Sunday Activities:

During the school year, we work with First United Methodist and Westminster Presbyterian to provide opportunities for faith and fellowship for our youth of all ages. Past events have included: skating, a family fun night at the JBS field house, games and food at HyVee (Encounter) and Outreach Nights at Ingahm/Okobji Camp (https://www.okoboji.org/outreach). Stay tuned for plans for the 2023-2024 school year.

First Communion:

We will commune youth at whatever age their tradition/practice encourages. We offer First Communion classes for 4th and 5th graders (pending on their parental preferences). These classes are three sessions long. Older youth who would like instruction are also encouraged to participate.

Summer Adventure and Mission Trips:

Each summer our youth are encouraged to attend an Adventure or Mission Trip. Adventure trips are camping type experiences for those completing 7th or 8th grade. Mission Trips are for those completing 8th-12th grades. We participate in the ELCA National Youth Gatherings when those are available. Fundraisers and scholarships are available. Please talk to Brenda Richards at tinymustardseed1720@gmail.com for more information.

Shetek:

Camping opportunities for all ages are available via Shetek Lutheran Ministries. Camp also comes and does environmental education with our youth once a year through Kids for Christ. Please talk to Brenda Richards at tiny mustardseed1720@gmail.com for more information.

Youth

Inspiring youth to grow in faith by sharing Christ's love with all people.

Here at First, we know that our children & youth are the church of tomorrow.  We also know that they are part of the church of today!  We welcome children of all ages, and strive to have a variety of activities for them to participate in.  We encourage our youth to walk in their daily faith not only with themselves, but with many others.  As a community of believers, we walk the path together, no matter the age.
